This tutorial will show you how to build a compensator for your milling machine using a quill dro. The machine used here is a NON-Bridgeport type, however you can use the same procedure on a Bridgeport milling machine.

It is not a secret that milling machines are not as precise as a newbey could think. There are lots of little deviation on there many components. This is compleatly normal but every small imperfection will add up giving the assembled machine a very large inacurracy. This is not because you bought a cheap machine or because yours is brocken. It is a normal fact of the machinist's life. But don't worry, there are a few tricks you can apply to correct these errors your machine has. A device that corrects a machine inherent error is sometimes refered to as a compensator as it compenses the error.

To much email we have received asking about drill bits... Ok guys here is the full story.

There are a lot of materials and coatings for the steel hungry tools we call drill bits. And yes, there is a proper speed for each material you are cutting. Some salesmen say that "The strategy" is selecting the proper base material and coating to do the job at the lowest cost. Yea right! So I have to buy like 5 to 7 types of drills for the different jobs my shop does? Don't worry folks... that's just salesmen rubbish. At the end of this print you will find a word to spindle speeds too.

Building a faceplate for a rotary table

 Faceplates are not expensive, but they are very heavy.  So when I bought my 4 in chuck to install it on my 6 in rotary table y decided not to buy the plate and build it my self. This way I have saved about US$100 including the cost of the plate it's self plus shipping it from the USA to Costa Rica, taxes and all that crap.
