This time, a 39.95 US$ cheap instrument kicks a 199.99 US$ high sophisticated 3D alignment indicator. It's not only a price contest... the cheap one is at least 10 times more accurate! What about the 6.00 US$ edge finder? well, if I knew the colleague how designed it, I'd probably ask him to stick it you know where. After all it's just 1/2 thick so...
This tutorial will show you how tobuild a compensator for your milling machine using a quill dro. The machine used here is a NON-Bridgeport type, however you can use the same procedure on a Bridgeport milling machine.
It is not a secret that milling machines are not as precise as a newbey could think. There are lots of little deviation on there many components. This is compleatly normal but every small imperfection will add up giving the assembled machine a very large inacurracy. This is not because you bought a cheap machine or because yours is brocken. It is a normal fact of the machinist's life. But don't worry, there are a few tricks you can apply to correct these errors your machine has. A device that corrects a machine inherent error is sometimes refered to as a compensator as it compenses the error.
To much
email we have received asking about drill bits... Ok guys here is the full
story.
There are a
lot of materials and coatings for the steel hungry tools we call drill bits. And
yes, there is a proper speed for each material you are cutting. Some salesmen
say that "The strategy" is selecting the proper base material and coating to do
the job at the lowest cost. Yea right! So I have to buy like 5 to 7 types of
drills for the different jobs my shop does? Don't worry folks... that's just
salesmen rubbish. At the end of this print you will find a word to spindle
speeds too.
Faceplates are not expensive, but they are very heavy. So when I
bought my 4 in chuck to install it on my 6 in rotary table y decided
not to buy the plate and build it my self. This way I have saved about
US$100 including the cost of the plate it's self plus shipping it from
the USA to Costa Rica, taxes and all that crap.
In this tutorial I will show you how to build this faceplate from start
to finish, the important thing is not the faceplate it's self, but the
many technics explained in high detail... enjoy.
